How to Polish Leather Shoes

Hey guys – Jonathon Stewart here for About.com. What’s the first thing people notice about you when you walk in a room? Is it your eyes, your hair, or your perfectly groomed eyebrows? Could be, but I’m here to tell you that all of these are followed by a very close second – your shoes. So they’d better be looking tip top – here are a few tips for polishing ‘em up. Why Polish Leather Shoes?

The best quality shoes are made of top grade leather, but if you don’t take care of them, even the nicest leather can look terrible over time. Start by finding a workspace that’s comfortable, but away from furniture or fabric that can be easily stained. You might even want to put down some newspaper or paper bags to make sure you don’t get any shoe polish anywhere other than on your shoes, where it belongs.

Remove Dirt From the Leather Shoes

The first step is to make sure your shoes aren’t dirty. After removing laces if you’ve got any, take a damp cloth or clean rag and wipe away any dust or debris clinging to your shoes. If they’re particularly filthy, try using a saddle soap or other leather cleaner to properly prep your kicks. You may want to invest in a couple tools to help in polishing your shoes, which can include chamois or buffing cloths, polish applicators, shining brushes, and a shoe horn. But really, aside from the shining brush, you can count on an old cotton t-shirt to do the jobs of those other dudes.

Polish the Leather Shoes

Next, evenly apply a generous amount of polish to your shoes with a clean cloth or applicator, though be sure not to cake it on. For tough to reach spots, try using a q-tip, especially near the seams to the sole. Once you’ve applied a first coat, allow the polish to dry for about fifteen minutes. Most times all you’ll need is a single coat, but if you’ve never polished your shoes, or if they’re in dire need of a shine, once you get through the next steps, you may need to go back and touch up the spots that need it most.

Buff the Leather Shoes

Next, use your shoe brush to get rid of any polish that hasn’t been absorbed by the leather of your shoes. Use a clean q-tip once again to get the tight spots, and don’t stop until you’ve wiped off all the polish. Finally, take a clean cloth or chamois and buff your polish to a shine.

With a just a little practice, you just might be able to get your shoes looking like mirrors. And you’ll be all grown up and doing the town. You know, my grandfather always said, when it comes to clothes – invest in your belts and your shoes. God ones are essential to looking your best, and if you treat them well, they’ll last you. That’s why I’ve been wearing the same belt since I was 12.

Canvas shoes are a great universal shoe choice when it comes to everyday footwear, however, they tend to get dirty and lose their shape over time. So today, I’m going to show you how to clean your canvas shoes without throwing them in the washer, where they can get ruined, so they continue looking great for many years to come.

Supplies Needed to Clean Canvas Shoes

For this task, you will need a toothbrush, laundry detergent, baking soda, a clean sponge, and roll of paper towels.

Remove Debris From the Canvas Shoes

First, pour a small amount of laundry detergent in the sink and fill the sink with approximately four inches of luke-warm water. Next, clap the soles of the canvas shoes together over a clean garbage can to loosen and remove any dirt or mud buildup on the edges and bottoms of the soles on each of the shoes.

Clean the Shoelaces

Next, remove the laces from each of the canvas shoes and use a clean damp sponge to wipe away any tough dirt marks around the edges and on the soles of the shoes.

Clean the Canvas Shoes

Gently place the shoes in the luke-warm water in the sink. Using your toothbrush, gently scrub the outside canvas surfaces of the shoes to remove any remaining dirt or stain buildup.

Next, sprinkle a small amount of baking soda inside the canvas shoes to help eliminate odors. Then, dip the shoe laces in the lukewarm water and thoroughly wash them by hand in the sudsy water until the laces are clean.

Next, rinse off the shoe laces under cold running tap water, wring out the excess water by hand, and then place the laces on a clean paper towel to air dry.

Rinse the Canvas Shoes

After draining the water from the sink, thoroughly rinse the canvas shoes under cold running tap water to remove any leftover soapy water that is still on the canvas shoes.

Dry the Canvas

Place the canvas shoes on a clean paper towel and allow them to air dry. Next, to help the shoes retain their form while drying, use your hands to crumple up two paper towels into two small wads. Then, place each of the crumpled up paper towel wads in the toe end of each of the canvas shoes. Allow the canvas shoes and shoe laces to thoroughly air dry.

Finally, once the shoes are dry, remove the wadded up paper towels from the toe end of the shoes and place the shoe laces back in each of the shoes.

Here’s How:

1. First practice just standing in high heels. In front of a full length mirror, stand for a while, then turn slightly to each side. Not only will you be able to check your posture and profile, but the act of merely standing in high heels will help remove some of your apprehension, and let you get accustomed to the added height of the heel.

2. Take a few steps in your high heels. If possible, do this at first on a hard floor (not too slick), or in a room with low carpeting, as really thick or padded carpeting can throw off your balance.

3. As you walk in high heels, remember to keep your legs straight and as close together as possible. With each step, point your feet as straight in front of you as you can. Start off with slow, determined steps at first, being extra conscientious of each step. As you build confidence and experience walking in high heels, it will become much more natural.

4. Continue walking back and forth across the room, turning different directions, and stopping without wobbling on your high heels. Once you’re comfortable with this, try the same thing on different floor surfaces, and remember to start off slowly with each one.

5. When it comes to actually walking comfortably, practice, practice, practice. If you haven’t ever worn high heels, or you are already comfortable in high heels, this sounds silly. But trust me, the first time you put them on, you’ll see what I mean. Wearing high heels is a totally different walking experience, and if you take it for granted, you’ll not only end up with sore feet, but possibly an injury. And, if you have a bad experience first time out, you’ll be doomed to flats forever.

6. As you grow more confident in your abilities to walk, turn, and do all the other things you might need to do in high heels, you can move up to the height of shoe you’ll be wearing on the day or night of your event – but remember to start slowly with each bit of added height. Jumping from two inch heels to four inch heels probably will not be quite as disorienting as your first step in any high heels, but it still will require patience and practice.
7. When wearing high heels on a staircase, always use the rail if it is available, or at least be close enough to a rail that you can reach it if you need to. When climbing steps, your entire shoe heel and sole should land firmly at once on each step.

8. If you know you’ll be slow dancing in your high heels, you should practice side-to-side stepping, as well as turning slowing in your high heels before actually hitting the dance floor.

Tips:

1. If high heels are not your thing, or if this is the first time you’ll be walking a lot in high heels, you may want to consider “working your way up” to the heel height you’d like to be wearing. Start with a lower heel than the high heels you’ll be wearing on the day or evening of the event, and practice walking in them first, using the above steps as you work your way up through to higher heels.

2. Consider starting out with a chunkier high heel, as opposed to a stiletto. If the high heels you’ll eventually be walking in have a thinner heel, you can at least adjust first to the “added height” element before adding balance to the equation.

3. If possible try to limit the number of obstacles in the first high heels you’ll be wearing – for example, a pair of high heels with rounded toes will probably be more comfortable than pointy-toed shoes, and you can concentrate more on walking gracefully in high heels if your toes aren’t being pinched together.

4. Try at first to avoid backless, or extremely flimsy high heels. Opting for a pump, or a sandal with an ankle strap will add support for your ankles, and will definitely help in your attempt to walk in high heels.

5. Fast dancing in high heels can be extremely dangerous, and should be avoided. But don’t think it’s okay to simply throw off your shoes and head barefoot onto the dance floor. This can be equally or more dangerous if you were to step on broken glass, or have someone else’s spiked heel come down squarely on the top of your foot. If you have a chance to remove high heels before dancing, do! When clubbing, opt for a lower heeled shoe that you can dance safely in – or go to the club, and don’t dance.
